SOUNDCLOUD BRACING FOR MASSIVE COPYRIGHT INFRINGEMENT LAWSUITS

Grooveshark said it wouldn’t happen to them, either.  But according to multiple executives close to the situation, Universal Music Group, Sony Music Entertainment, and the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) will soon be filing lawsuits against SoundCloud for ‘massive copyright infringement’.

The move comes ahead of an anticipated premium subscription launch… or not.  “They don’t like SoundCloud’s attitude, they don’t like the pace of the talks,” one source flatly told DMN, with particular reference to SoundCloud’s CEO, Alexander Ljung.

“I’m not saying this is another ‘legal jihad,’ but lawsuits will be filed.”

And what is SoundCloud’s ‘tude, exactly?  One issue is Ljung’s insistence on maintaining a free tier, similar to the ‘freemium funnel’ created by Spotify.  “There are 3 billion people online, you’re never going to all get those into subscription, it’s just not going happen,” Ljung flatly stated recently at Midem.  “Some people will come through ads, some through subscription.”

“That’s why I’m choosing to have both.”

But from the standpoint of mega-labels like UMG, that’s not necessarily his choice to make.   And neither are the terms of their contracts.

Meanwhile, uploading DJs are finding their content blocked based on stepped-up copyright claims from companies like Sony, a situation that spells more than inconvenience.  “The DJs are getting strikes for infringement, and that’s affecting their accounts,” one source noted.  “They’re trying to avoid that and thinking about other places to upload.”

The news comes just as indie label consortium Merlin has inked a significant deal with SoundCloud, a pact the ushers in potentially 20,000 label participants.  “I’m excited to announce our largest independent label partnership to date with Merlin, the global rights agency for the independent label sector,” Ljung said.

Sounds positive, though it’s not clear that Merlin signed a solid deal.  After all, this is the same consortium that signed a deal with Grooveshark, essentially validating the company right to the bitter end.

But wait: isn’t SoundCloud already signing major label deals?  Well, they have signed one deal with Warner Music Group, but that deal is already being written off as a “special case one-off” scenario driven by SoundCloud SVP of Business Development and Strategy Stephen Bryan, who recently worked at Warner Music Group.  That deal handed WMG a 5 percent share, which apparently just isn’t good enough.

Who is lethal ? Where did he come from ?

Lethal Corleone is a Southern born rapper hailing from the streets of Savannah, Georgia. Although Lethal was born in Charleston, South Carolina he has spent the vast majority of his life in Georgia. These southern roots mixed with a universal sound, has given this artist a deadly combination. This combination gave partiality to his name, and Lethal was created.

Lethal wrote his first rap at the age of 12, and began recording in studios at the age of 16. This early beginning has molded him into a seasoned artist. Lethal started with a group made up of family members and close friends known as C.E.P. His first underground release came at the age of 18, and gained him significant notoriety from his peers on the local scene. After a long awaited interval between his follow up, Lethal seems to be more focused than ever. His sophomore mix tape entitled Time Served enjoyed only relative success, but after being gone for so long he seems to be regaining his form. Lethal recently teamed up to begin a label called Mob Life Entertainment with his fellow C.E.P. group mate Nino Black.

You may have seen him on YouTube videos of various local artists in Savannah called the C-Port ciphers. On these videos Lethal clearly demonstrates versatility and a ferocious flow. He also shot his first video for his highly anticipated single “Take Off”. Now trying to capitalize off of the momentum gained, he is working to release a project that will ensure him a top slot as one of the best. The future seems to be much more promising for the Savannah native.

National HIV Testing Day

                   National HIV Testing Day

From the Desk of Tishawn Marie

On June 27, 2015, in honor of National HIV Testing Day, Celestial Caring Enterprises and our client, Essence Bestselling Author, Tia Hines encourages you to get tested for HIV.  HIV (human immunodeficiency virus) that causes AIDS.

The only way to know if you have HIV is to get tested.  Many people with HIV don’t have any symptoms.  In the United States, 1 in 7 people living with HIV don’t know they have it.

Even if you don’t feel sick, getting early treatment for HIV is important.  Early treatment can help you live a longer, healthier life.  Treatment can also make it less likely that you will pass HIV on to other people.

Am I at risk for HIV?

HIV is spread through some of the body fluids, semen (cum), vaginal fluids, and breast milk.  HIV is passed from one person to another by:

  • Having sex (vaginal, anal, or oral) without a condom or dental dam with a person who has HIV.
  • Sharing needles with someone who has HIV.
  • Breastfeeding, pregnancy, or childbirth, if the mother has HIV.
  • Getting a transfusion of blood that’s infected with HIV (very rare in the United States.)
Thanks to the Affordable Care Act, the health care reform law passed in 2010, insurance plans must cover HIV testing.  Talk to your insurance company to learn more.
Free HIV testing is also available at some testing centers and health clinics.

"HIV does not discriminate!" ~ Tia Hines.

Pump Those Breaks! Killer Mike Not Yet Ready For Political Office

On Monday Michael Render aka Killer Mike announced his candidacy in a special election for state house district 55 in Georgia.  He went on Instagram to ask everyone to write his name in at the polls. One problem however…

Mike cannot run as a write-in candidate without filling the paperwork that would be necessary. That did not kill his aspirations and excitement. He went back 5 hours later to post a video on Instagram to acknowledge he cannot run and was happy that he was able to draw attention to this race.

We have BIG Problems in education, schools and prison reform in Ga and I wanna see change. I wanna see Yall active in Local politics. The fact that ya’ll are willing to support me shows change is possible and while I run around rapping with @thereallyrealelp doing #RunTheJewels for the next few yrs I want ya’ll to get & stay active and Run for office! We need more New and fresh ideas & people!

Killer Mike also ended with the comment, “I will Run In the Future and We Will Win! Love and Respect Michael Render.” Special elections tend to always have very small voting turnout, so even if Killer Mike cannot run being able to see if he changed the outcome will be worth watching out for.

There seems to be a real change in consciousness in hip hop as of late. The success of J. Cole and Kendrick Lamar was a sign with their sales and corresponding content, but rappers wanting to actually run for office is another beast in itself. 2 Chainz and Waka Flocka have expressed their intentions and thoughts about running for public office.

If people will take Donald Trump for president seriously, that is all the more reason for rappers to organize and run for office of their own.

What is apple really trying to do in the music industry

Apple plans to charge between $9.99 and $14.99 per month for its upcoming on-demand Apple Music service, with 58 percent of its subscription revenues going to record labels. For every $9.99 Apple collects from subscribers in the United States, it will pay out $5.80 to labels. Additionally, Apple pays approximately 12 percent to publishers and/or songwriters, leaving the company with somewhere around 30 percent of the revenue from the Apple Music service.

The figures come from a leaked document shared by Digital Music News earlier this week. In its article, Digital Music Newserroneously suggested Apple was paying less to music labels than other streaming music services like Spotify (after failing to take into account the publisher's fee), but as it turns out, the 70 percent that Apple pays out to rights holders is on par with the industry standard.

applemusiccontract58excerpt
In some circumstances, the fees provided to rights holders can vary, such as when student accounts are involved or when the Apple Music service is provided through a third-party service like Google Play or bundled into a carrier package. During Apple's three-month free trial period that it provides to all subscribers, it is not required to pay any fees to rights holders.

Profit sharing and value concerns often cause a lot of tension between streaming music services, record labels, artists, and other rights holders. Many artists have complained about the low fees they receive from streaming music services, primarily those with free streaming tiers. Taylor Swift famously pulled all of her music from Spotify last year, claiming that by offering music for free, Spotify was undervaluing her work.
With Beats Music and Rhapsody you have to pay for a premium package in order to access my albums. And that places a perception of value on what I've created. On Spotify, they don't have any settings, or any kind of qualifications for who gets what music. I think that people should feel that there is a value to what musicians have created, and that's that.
Apple does not offer a free ad-supported tier for its on-demand streaming music service, choosing to supplement instead with an accompanying radio service. Apple has even allegedly urged record labels to cease offering deals to services that do offer free ad-supported listening tiers, like Spotify and YouTube.

Apple's focus on paid-only music is unsurprising, given the current state of the streaming music industry. Spotify recently announced 75 million users and 20 million paid subscribers, but Spotify continues to operate at a loss. With more than 800 million iTunes accounts with credit cards attached at its disposal, Apple Music could quickly become one of the most profitable streaming services, as long as Apple can draw in customers.

Apple Music launches on June 30 as part of iOS 8.4.

The Voice” Contestant Anthony Riley Found Dead in Philly Apartment

Anthony Riley, a former contestant on the most recent season of NBC’s The Voice, was found dead in his apartment on Friday. He was 28.

The 2015 XXL Freshman Cover Neglects Up and Coming Latino Rapper

The XXL hip hop magazine published their freshman 2015 cover and this year has is stirring up major controversy about who was and was not featured on the cover.

In order for an artist to be considered eligible for the freshman cover they can not have any full-length albums out, but EPs, mixtapes, and singles are acceptable. This years XXL class of 2015 features Fetty Wap, Raury, Tink, K Camp, Vince Staples, Goldlink, Dej Loaf, Shy Glizzy, OG Maco, and most surprisingly of all Kidd Kidd.

In earlier years XXL was criticized for not featuring any women on the cover until 2012 when Iggy Azalea questionably became the first female emcee elected to the freshmen cover. Now the Latin community is sounding off because the lack of their presence on the XXL cover despite having some extremely talented artists.

Produkt, the up and coming Latino rapper from the Bronx, rightfully should have been a part of this year’s freshman cover. The hard-hitting rapper has seen his career explode last year when he became the first rapper to receive three nominations in one year for the Underground Music Awards when he released two hit singles “Hold it Down” and “Freak Affair.” “Hold it Down” received two nomination for Best Video and Song of the Year at the UMA 4 at the All Star Music Awards in NYC as well as he has received over a million views online. Produkt recently released an impressive video for his latest hit “Back on the Run” and he is actually releasing an EP June 16th titled “in·con·spic·u·ous.” He’s the most decorated underground artist in NYC underground history.

Produkt let the world know how he felt about the cover on his Facebook page saying ” Hip Hop is a culture born to show the world a struggle that had no voice. Hispanic, Black, or White; the culture united us by pain. Is mainstream media creating a divide? Are Latinos being Disregarded or are we not grinding hard enough?”

Another hot up and coming Latino artist that was left off of the list is the Spanish Harlem rapper, Bodega Bamz. Bamz has steadily been releasing music for the past couple of years but recently started turning heads in 2013 after he dropped his Strictly 4 my P.A.P.I.Z mixtape.  Bamz is the face of the Tanboys, a collective group of Hispanic MC’s, simply thanked XXL for the consideration of being on the cover.

Fat Trel isn’t a Latin rapper but he was also an artist who has been making some major noise that was left off of the cover. Trel was initially signed to Wale’s Board of Administration label in 2010 and dropped his No Secrets mixtape.  The partnership didn’t last long with Trel leaving the label and dropping his Nightmare on E Street mixtape in 2012 putting him on a lot of people’s radar. He signed with Rick Ross and MMG in 2013 and dropped the Georgetown mixtape this year.

Did XXL submit the best artist to this year’s freshman class cover? Sound off in the comments and let us know what you think.

Chicago rapper murdered after making fun of Chief Keef’s gang

young-pappy

About a week ago, rapper Shaquon “Young Pappy” Thomas posted a video making fun of a rival gang while pretending to hold a gun in his hands. “You don’t even know how to shoot,” Thomas rapped in the video, titled “Shooters.”

Early Friday, the 20-year-old Thomas was gunned down about a block from where he recorded that video on the streets of Uptown. It’s an area where three street gangs — the Conservative Vice Lords, the Gangster Disciples and the Black P Stones — have been locked in a long-running feud. Thomas was a Gangster Disciple, according to police.

A rival of Chief Keef’s gang affiliation to the Black Disciples. In the past, in his popular viral track “3hunna,” Chief Keef has a line “f**k a Tooka gang b**ch I’m 3 hunna,” with “Tooka” and “3hunna” being gang references.  Tooka is GD (Gangsta Disciple) And 3hunna is BD (Black Disciple). Both gangs are in the southside of Chicago.

Around 1:35 a.m. Friday, Young Pappy was with a friend in the 4800 block of North Kenmore Avenue when a gunman walked up and started shooting, authorities said. Thomas was hit twice in the back and taken to Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead at 3:01 a.m.

It was at least the third time someone had tried to kill Thomas in the last year and a half, according to police.  The other two times, innocent bystanders died. Did Young Pappy have this one coming or is this another act of senseless violence? Hit that comment section below…

Drake and Pharrell are about to get some nice checks courtesy of Apple

Drake and Pharrell are about to get some nice checks courtesy of Apple. When the Tidal press conference was held and the two artists were missing it seemed odd as Jay-Z has a good relationship with both men, especially Pharrell. The reason for their absence is now making sense.

pharrellwilliams
While the exact roles of the two are still murky, New York Post reports that one role for the two will be that of guest DJ on iTunes radio. This move shows Apple really means business and are gunning for that number one spot by taking on Spotify, Pandora, and Tidal. Apple Music is also looking to offer a free three-month trial and that their subscription fee with be $10. Also they report that there may be a section where users can upload their own content, like YouTube.

The music streaming business has boomed as of late. With Apple’s 2015 WorldWide Developer’s Conference next week, June 8th through the 12th, expect all the details to be cleared up along with some surprises. How Apple plans to change the market is going to be compelling to see as they missed their earlier launch date in March.

Will Apple Music make a major dent in the market or just become another Tidal?

While One Member of The Trio is Locked Up, Migos Reveal Artwork & Music Release Date Jarvis Gilmore (@JarvisG_) | May 28,

The show must go on as the saying goes! It has been an interesting year for the Migos to say the least. The group went to Georgia Southern University last month and end up going to jail midway through their performance. While two of the three where able to make bail, Offset remains locked up in a Georgia jail awaiting trial for a series of charges. That is not going to stop the promotion for their debut album YRN Tha Album.

YRN-TrillGraham

The album cover is very similar to the Versace logo, which makes sense as The Migos have a huge song of the same name from a few years back. The album which has had some set backs is scheduled for July 31st.Hopefully Offset will be out by then and their legal situations begin to clear themselves up so they focus on the music and promote their biggest project to date.

Jay Z Tells Spotify, Youtube “I’m Not Your Slave and Reunites with The Roc!

Jay-Z-B-Sides
This past Saturday (May 16th) Jay-Z held his Tidal exclusive concert in New York City. The concert where he preformed his B-side tracks and B-sides are the songs that were not meant for radio or not promoted as such. Basically for Jay-Z fans he preformed his really good stuff. Songs such as ‘D’evils’, ‘U Don’t Know’, ‘Where I’m From’, ‘Friend of Foe’ and many other classic Jay songs. Hov also kept it classy with a moment of silence for the late and great B.B. King, first playing a portion of ‘The Thrill is Gone’.

The icing on the cake for many was when Memphis Bleek, Beanie Sigel, Young Gunz and Freeway all hit the stage and simultaneously ending any beefs that had previously existed. This was the first time in over a decade since they all got together since the break up of Roc-a-fella records. Dame Dash and Kanye West were not there but it did not take away from the emotional moment for many. The guest list did not end there; Jeezy, Jay Electronica and Just Blaze also came out preformed as well.

While seeing The Roc united was a great moment, it was not the only talked about one. Jay-Z started freestyling and there were some very interesting lyrics. It is probably the closest to a Kanye West rant we may ever get from Jay.

“Don’t ever go with the flow, be the flow
And I don’t need no middle man to talk to my ni**as
I understand if you don’t understand, I figure I’m Jigga
That’s where we differ
I take what’s mine, you accept what they give you, I get you
I don’t take no checks, I take my respect
Pharrell even told me go with the safest bet
Jimmy Iovine offered a safety net
Google dangled ’round a crazy check
I feel like YouTube is the biggest culprit
Them ni**as pay you a tenth of what you supposed to get
You know ni**as die for equal pay right?
You know when I work I ain’t your slave right?
You know I ain’t shucking and jiving and high-fiving, and you know this ain’t back in the days right?
Well I can’t tell, how the way they killed Freddie Gray right?
Shot down Mike Brown how they did Tray right?
Let them continue choking ni**as,
We gon’ turn style, I ain’t your token ni**a
You know I came in this game independent, right?
Tidal, my own lane, same difference
Oh ni**as is skeptical about they own shit
You bought nine iPhones and Steve Jobs is rich
Phil Knight worth trillions you still bought those kicks
Spotify is nine billion and they ain’t say s–t!
‘Lucy you got some ‘splaining to do’
The only one they hating on look the same as you…
That’s cool, I know they trying to bamboozle you
Spending millions on media trying to confuse you
I had to talk to myself, ‘Hov you used to it’
It’s politics as usual”

Naturally he transitioned into his song ‘Politics as Usual’, but the tale of Tidal’s demise may be greatly over exaggerated if you let Jay-Z tell it. With reports that the new music streaming service Tidal is not doing very well, this freestyle may open eyes and challenge the consumer to ask themselves bigger questions.

There does seem to be a double standard on those saying that Jay is just trying to make more money, but Nike and Apple are worth x times the amount more but continue to bring in money from the black community. YouTube is also known to be shady with how much a person really should be making off monetizing their views with their ad placements.

At the same time, Jay-Z and the other artist that co-own Tidal may also have greatly exaggerated how much music is worth in today’s market. When there is a free option to stream the same content, the sound has to be drastically better. While Tidal has the Hi-fi subscription option it is at $19.99 and the basic membership is $9.99 to hear the same quality as free Spotify or Pandora.

Overall, the B-side concert was one that many are going to remember and for that one night at least, we saw Jay take off the business hat as he brought old friends and preformed the songs that made him a rap legend. If this can give Tidal the extra momentum it needs is what remains to be seen. Who knows, there might be a Beyonce B-side concert in Houston coming where she brings out Destiny’s Child…with LeToya Luckett and Latvia

Album-review-snoop-dogg-bush

Snoop Dogg, Snoop Lion, Snoop Doggy Dogg or simply Calvin Broadus has sustained a longevity that is amazing in hip hop. The man knows how to reinvent the wheel but he always has a certain style that just works. For Snoop it tends to be funk music and working with Pharrell Williams. The two have mega hits together, who does not remember ‘Drop It Like It’s Hot’? The idea that this album Bush was entirely produced by Pharrell got fans excited for what they would hear. The results are somewhat mixed.

Being Snoop’s 13th album, an accomplishment in itself, is heavily influenced by funk sounds and some 70s style R&B. Those are the type of songs Snoop is tailored made for and the production is amazing, so what is missing from this project? Well it seems to be the lack of actual rhyming. Snoop Dogg spends the entire album singing really. While he does not have an unbearable singing voice like Eminem does, having the album being Snoop Dogg and the Funkettes just misses the mark of what it could have been. The lack of collaborations with rappers makes this clear since the guest appearances are the only time you get hear any rapping. T.I., Kendrick Lamar and Rick Ross appear on Bush as well as Stevie Wonder, Gwen Stefani, and Charlie Wilson. The way Snoop balanced out his guests with rappers and singers is the same way this album should have been approached with himself.

This is not to say that Bush is bad but just underwhelming. There are of course standout tracks; ‘I’m Ya Dogg’, ‘This City’ and the single ‘Peaches and Cream’ are easily enjoyable. What hurts the album is also what arguably makes it work, the cohesiveness. It is so cohesive with Pharrell being the executive producer that it all begins to sound the same. With only ten tracks total they all blend together making it hard to really like one more than the other. Bush’scritical error is believing there is no such thing as too much of a good thing. This CD is going to have its fans, especially anyone who is a product of the 70’s the way Snoop and Pharrell are.

In a way its the perfect Snoop Dogg album for the point he is in his career. Snoop does create a very feel good vibe that could sit down and enjoy, especially if you partake in the same recreational activities as Snoop. It is going to be great for cookouts and pool parties, but once the summer is over, Bush’s may not get much time in rotation.
