As forerunners of the midwest “garage soul” movement, Jared Mahone and his band

As forerunners of the midwest “garage soul” movement, Jared Mahone and his band fill out singer/songwriter tunes with the throwback sound of a powerhouse band. Mahone recently competed to win Verizon’s Indie Icon title against against other hot indie music acts in the Midwest and came out on top! As Verizon’s first Indie Icon, he had a chance to play at the 2013 Essence Festival in New Orleans. Other artists such as BeyoncĂ©, Keyshia Cole, and LL Cool J also performed at the festival, which was held over the Fourth of July weekend.

“Thank you so much for being the conduit that made this happen for us. There is no independent artist I know who doesn’t think it’s a must to have a ReverbNation page. Thank you for supporting the indie artist and for helping to make us Verizon’s Indie Icon.“

-Jared Mahone

HomeMore in BusinessNext Article How Musicians Really Make Money in One Long Graph

Ever wonder what it actually takes to make a living as a musician based only on online sales and streams? This article from The Atlantic shows a graph posted by Information Is Beautiful which breaks it down quite nicely. We thought our Radio Airplay artists might find this informative, as it specifically shows how musicians really make money in today's industry.

In the 1950s, it was not uncommon for a band to make money off an ancient bit of technology known colloquially as an "album." People bought "albums" in exchange for money that was divided mostly between the store, the label, the distributor, and the band, which included not only the artists, but also producers and lawyers.

In the following 60 years, music hasn't died, but the old business model quite nearly did. People still buy solid, non-digital albums. Millions of people, in fact. In fact, vinyl sales are projected to hit 3.6 million in 2011, more than 10-times the figure from 1993.

But the vast majority of music we listen to comes out of the Internet, where most of it is free. How are bands supposed to make money off of clouds and $0.99 files? This extremely cool chart from the folks at Information Is Beautiful, based on a post at The Cynical Musician on digital royalties, explains:

Bone thugs-n-harmony " EveryThing 100 "

Bone Thugs-N-Harmony – ‘Everything 100′

Are back with a brand new song called ‘Everything 100,’ their first in quite some time. The song features Ty Dolla $ign, who recently signed with Wiz Khalifa’s Taylor Gang imprint. Ty appears to be on the hook, his signature breezy vocals matching Bone Thugs’ patented harmonizing style. All five members of the legendary rap group come together on ‘Everything 100,’ but something still feels wrong about the song. Maybe it’s lines like “She’s seen I lost weight and now she wanna see the stomach,” that make ‘Everything 100′ feel like an attempt to reinvent the group for a newer audience, which might be a mistake.

It has not been a smooth ride for 40 Glocc; at one time The Game got so rough he played a game on him and The Game got himself sued! He says the rapper jumped him for "entertainment purposes." 40 Glocc succeeded in winning the lawsuit by default. A word to the wise be careful what you do to and for people “For Entertainment Purposes”.

40 Glocc shared the reason for the suit with VladTV.com: “As far as the lawsuit, I looked at it as what he did. He didn’t do that as no street sh@#. I looked at it more like he did it as an entertainment purpose,” 40 Glocc explained. “So if it’s an entertainment purpose, ‘Hey, I’m an entertainer. I get paid to entertain.’ You made that fake *** movie, and made a fake *** edit. Lied about everything that took part, but you did it to assassinate me. And as an entertainer I’m like, I get compensated. You know I do movies. I have done movies, films, TV, videos. So I get paid to entertain on that side of it. At the same time I seen it like, if that was some real beef and it wasn’t for entertainment purposes, you wouldn’t have recorded no track like that and put it out, because that’s like letting the authorities know.”

Some will always say you're wrong

Some people are into money. Some aren’t.

Some people are inspired by helping the needy. Some aren’t.

Some are into fame, power, and prestige. Others are into anonymity and freedom from responsibility.

It gets more interesting when you realize people have different preferences in the different parts of their life. Famous online, but anonymous in their local community. Generous with time, stingy with money. Introvert when working, extrovert when not.

You have to know your preferences well, because no matter what you do, someone will tell you you’re wrong.

If you’re not into money, many people will say you’re foolish.

If you’re not into charity, many people will say you’re greedy.

If you’re not into crowds, many people will say you’re missing out.

Some careers come with excuses:

The classic novelist thrives in solitude. Alone in a cabin in the woods, writing books that reach millions.

The classic journalist thrives in a crowd. Talking with everyone, building the story from a thousand accounts.

The shy librarian. The aggressive lawyer. The flaky artist. No explanation needed.

But some careers need explanations when you go against the mold:

The entrepreneur who’s not into money.

The musician who avoids crowds.

The ambitious conservationist.

The artist into discpline.

The rich poet.

But if you expect this criticism in advance, and take pride in your stance, you can bash on with a smile, being who you want to be.

Then every time they say you’re wrong, that’s a sign you’re doing it right.
